original HYDRA, former NSA scientist and Shunyata founder,
Caelin Gabriel continued the refinement of the Hydra concept. As

TRIDENT DEFENCE SYSTEM -- POWER NOISE

Protection from power spikes, surges and line noise-that may impact a system's
longevity and performance-has become increasingly important given the cost of
many home entertainment systems. Most power conditioners and power strips
utilize a simple MOV protection scheme that is only effective against noise and
spikes above -300 volts while allowing disturbances in the critical 120 volt to
300 volt range to pass through to your system. Shunyata Research has designed
the exclusive multi-stage Trident Defence System that provides comprehensive
power protection to complement the state-of-the-art performance of the HYDRA
Model-8.
STAGE 1: Shunyaya Research's exclusive
Venom Filter
The Trident Defence System begins with Shunyata Research's custom designed VENOM
Filter. The VENOM Filter is a four-element capacitive array designed to
eliminate over-voltage spikes of only a few volts to beyond 1,000 volts on
transients. After years of testing a multitude of power capacitors, Shunyata
Research commissioned the production of special metalized-polyester capacitors,
designed to its specifications. These capacitors are capable of absorbing
high-energy spikes in excess of 1,000 volts, repeatedly, without damage or
deterioration. Additionally, they perform their function of spike and noise
elimination without the "ringing" or grainy sound associated with common power
line capacitors.
STAGE 2: NextGen TMOVs
The Trident Defence System employs a six-element array of TMOVs that provides
6,000 volts of over-voltage transient protection and up to 60,000 amps of peak
current protection. Although the VENOM Filter can manage voltage events in
excess of 1,000 volts -it is only called upon to handle voltage transients below
the TMOV's activation stage of approximately 340 VAC. These next-generation
devices are massive 20mm varistor discs that have integrated, internal thermal
protection. Unlike common MOVs of the past, they cannot explode or catch fire in
the rare event of a catastrophic over-voltage condition.
STAGE 3: Carling Electromagnetic Breaker
The final stage of the Trident Defence System is provided by a special Carling
electromagnetic circuit breaker. This custom manufactured breaker uses large
surface area contacts that allow unimpeded current flow-even when operating at
maximum current load. These breakers incorporate a separate current sensing
circuit that is not in the current path, avoiding the power delivery
degradations common to thermal breakers and fuses.
In the event of over-currents that exceed 20 amps, the electromagnetic breaker
will break the connection to the power line, providing complete protection to
your system.
The Trident Defence System's three stages of protection combine to bestow the
HYDRA Model-8 with unequaled protection from all manner of noise, line
transients and voltage surges. The fact that this is accomplished without
impeding current or degrading performance places the HYDRA Model-8 in a class by
itself.
PROVEN RESULTS
The following graphs depict the Hydra model 8's profound noise cancelling
capability. These results demonstrate that the Hydra 8 literally eliminates
noise existing on the power-line. The Hydra model 8 allows any electronics
system to remain at a peak performance level, despite time of day variables or
increased noise on the power-line.
NEW BUSS STRUCTURE AND FeSi-1002 COMPOUND
The Model-8's power distribution buss array has been refined and improved. The
massive buss bars are machined from the finest cryogenic grade CDA-1 01
copper-the highest purity available. These precision machined buss bars are over
five inches long and an incredible 1.5 inches thick and weigh in at over five
pounds. The HYDRA Model-8 buss system is radically over-engineered and is
capable of providing unlimited performance in the most demanding professional or
consumer applications.
The buss system is housed within a
hermetically sealed internal aluminium chassis filled with Shunyata Research's
exclusive FeSi-1002 compound. The FeSi-1002 compounds are patented
(US#6,545,213) for use in the Powersnakes power cords and perform a similar
noise-reduction function within the HYDRA Model-8.
The FeSi-1002 compound is a synthetically manufactured ceramic material that is
similar in appearance to crystalline beads.
Although the substance has no metallic
content, it has a similar effect as ferrites in that it absorbs electromagnetic
noise within its molecular structure. The FeSi-1002 compound's passive noise
reduction avoids the dynamically compressive effects commonly associated with
ferrites, transformers, chokes and coils.
Professional and home entertainment systems
place high demands on power and current delivery. Many systems require the full
15-20 amps of current available from typical power circuits. All regenerators
and most line-conditioners are incapable of delivering the continuous current
necessary for high power amplifiers, video projectors and full entertainment
systems. Although line-conditioners, regenerators and power strips all have a
maximum rated power output, most cannot supply their rated power on a continuous
basis without significant degradation.
Thermal breakers and simple fuses-as used
in most power products -are specifically designed to heat-up as they reach
70-90%> of their rated output. This heating effect causes increased power line
resistance that degrades linear current flow and compromises maximum throughput.
The HYDRA Model-8, with its silver wiring, massive buss array and costly
electromagnetic breaker is specifically designed to operate, day-after-day,
without generation of heat or loss of current flow linearity. This critical
design element allows the HYDRA Model-8 to avoid the dynamic compression, loss
of detail and time-smear commonly associated with other power distribution
products.
ALL ALUMINIUM DUAL CHASSIS
The original Hydra's elegant, artisan crafted chassis defined the finest
workmanship of its kind. The HYDRA Model-8's chassis is constructed to the same
high standards but the design focus has shifted from visual elegance to superior
noise isolation and system utility.
The Model-8's case is constructed from an expensive, heavy gauge aluminium
material that provides superior electromagnetic isolation and shielding at line
frequencies. Additionally, a second inner aluminium chamber isolates and
encloses the HYDRA's massive distribution buss system and FeSi-1002 compounds.
The HYDRA Model-8 is finished with an elegant faceplate of solid machined
aluminium.
NOTHING LEFT TO CHANCE OR COMPROMISE
Shunyata Research manufactures its own Teflon insulated, silver wiring for the
HYDRA Model-8. The wiring and Hubbell's top grade outlets are cryogenically
treated in our lab for optimum performance.
Internally, the HYDRA Model-8 has four discrete circuits; two optimized for
digital electronics and two that are dedicated to analogue equipment. Fifteen
individual wires are carefully routed through a precision-machined aluminium
barrier, designed to control cross-circuit interference by maintaining precise
and consistent wire-to-wire separation. This prevents digital and other
noise-generating components from negatively affecting the performance of the
other system components.
